The girl on the right has lost her hearing and is unable to speak and seems to also suffer from trauma or another mental disability. Because she is unable to describe her experience, it is unknown what has happened to her since she has been on her own. (UNICEF/ HQ97-0963/Jeremy Horner)
Regional Consultations

Between March and July 2005, nine regional consultations were convened. Each consultation brought together an average of 350 participants, including Government ministers and officials, parliamentarians, representatives of regional and other intergovernmental organizations and United Nations entities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), national human rights institutions (NHRIs), other parts of civil society, including the media and faith-based organizations, and children. The study prepared a number of documents to stimulate and guide the organization of regional consultations. Click here to see the documents. Preparations for each consultation were led by regional steering committees comprised of Government representatives, United Nations and other international entities, NGOs and other parts of civil society, facilitated by UNICEF, with the support of OHCHR, WHO and other partners. Click here to see more about what happened in each of the consultations. National and Sub Regional Consultations were also organized in several countries in conjunction with UNICEF’s country offices and numerous other governmental, intergovernmental, regional and sub-regional organizations, and non-governmental partners. These consultations were developed with the same framework used in the regional processes. To see some of the outcomes from the National and Sub-Regional consultations, click here. In some regions follow up meetings were promoted after the release of the Study.
