30High Level Expert Meeting on the Outcomes of the Secretary-General’s Study on Violence against Children, Geneva

The Independent Expert coordinated a High Level Expert meeting on the outcomes of the study. The meeting brought together high level representatives from the three UN agencies coordinating the Study and other organizations that collaborated in the process such as the Council of Europe, Save the Children Alliance and the African Policy Forum. The discussions focused on the Study’s recommendations and the challenges for ensuring global, regional and local implementation and follow up.

11-12Second International Policy Conference on the African Child: Violence against Girls in Africa, Addis Ababa

The Second International Policy Conference on the African Child convened in Ethiopia bringing together representatives from Governments, international and civil society entities, including children, representatives from the African Union, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and other Pan-African policy makers. The independent expert presented the UN Study on Violence against Children and discussed with experts the importance of this study for the African child (click here to read his presentation). The expert also met with children participants from the African region and participated in the concluding session where a pledge on stopping violence against the African Child was read and a declaration was adopted. 7-8Visit to Sweden, Stockholm

In Stockholm, Pinheiro participated in the International Save the Children Alliance Assembly where he addressed the directors of the thirty offices of Save the Children that compose the Alliance. The independent expert expressed thanks for the commitment of Save the Children to the Study and presented the key expected outcomes of the study. Pinheiro also met with representatives from the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from the Swedish international development cooperation agency. (Click here to learn more about Save Alliance).

4-5Visit to Norway, Oslo

The Independent Expert visited Oslo to discuss the upcoming study report and the best strategies to ensure its positive impact with representatives of the Norwegian Government and of the local civil society. The expert met with several government officials in Oslo, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the State Secretary for International Development and the State Secretary for the Ministry for Children and Equality. In a seminar entitled “The UN Secretary General’s Study on Violence against Children - An opportunity to make real changes for children”, Pinheiro made an informal presentation on the expected outcomes of the study.
