As part of his new mandate as ‘Commissioner of the Independent Special Commission of Inquiry for Timor-Leste’, the Independent Expert visited Timor- Leste, and participated in the launch of a report on corporal punishment, titled ‘Speak to me nicely. A Study on Practices and Attitudes about Discipline of Children in Timor-Leste’. This Study is a joint initiative between UNICEF Timor-Leste, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of Labour and Community Reinsertion and PLAN International in Timor-Leste. The study explores how parents, teachers and caregivers in Timor-Leste discipline children. The findings of the Study will contribute towards documenting positive child-rearing practices among parents, teachers and caregivers and to initiate dialogue on the protection of children.
