The Juvenile Defender Leadership Summit gathered defenders who work with youth in the United States of America and was organized by the National Juvenile Defender Center. In his presentation the Expert discussed ways to incorporate international law into the policy and practice of juvenile defenders and made reference to the Study recommendations.

The Independent Expert presented his report to member States of the Organization of American States (OAS) in an extraordinary session of the Committee of Juridical and Political Affairs of the OAS. The Deputy Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Maud de Boer-Buquicchio also participated in the session and presented the Council’s activities with regard to the issues raised in the Study and the protection of human rights more generally. Member States discussed the possibilities of follow up to the Study in the Americas and the need to strengthen cooperation among regional bodies.

The Independent Expert presented the United Nations Secretary-General’s Study on Violence against Children to the Third Committee of the General Assembly on 11 October 2006. In addition to presenting the report to the Third Committee, the Expert held bilateral and group meetings with representatives of Member States from all regions. Other activities around the launch included the release of child friendly materials and a preview of the World Report on Violence against Children. The Expert also participated in a round table discussion with children, authorities and experts.

The Independent Expert participated in the opening of the third consultation of Child Helpline International (CHI). The conference was supported by BRIS, the CHI member from Sweden, Plan Netherlands, the Stockholm City Council and the Childhood Foundation. The meeting was also under the patronage of Her Majesty, the Queen of Sweden. Prof. Pinheiro presented the key recommendations of the Study and emphasized the role of mechanisms such as help lines in supporting children, early detection of and response to violence against children.
