The girl on the right has lost her hearing and is unable to speak and seems to also suffer from trauma or another mental disability. Because she is unable to describe her experience, it is unknown what has happened to her since she has been on her own. (UNICEF/ HQ97-0963/Jeremy Horner)

Professor Pinheiro spoke in the opening of the conference, emphasizing the need for strong regional coordination and a specific mechanism for ensuring that the recommendations of the Study are implemented. Prof. Pinheiro: “Nobody wants this to be another report for your bookshelf – we want action, and the children who have participated throughout this process demand no less”. The meeting agreed to identify focal points at national level, preferably with technical resource units as part of the national child rights committees. These focal points would be represented on a regional committee responsible for follow up on the Study recommendations, and linked to the Arab League. Click here to read the final report.
