Susan Bissell
Dr. Susan Bissell is currently posted as a Senior Project Officer at the Innocenti, UNICEF’s International Research Center in Florence, Italy, having recently transferred from her position as UNICEF’s Child Protection Chief in India. A doctor of public health and medical anthropology, Susan served for twelve years with UNICEF in South Asia (India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka), and has also worked with UNICEF in Lesotho, Nairobi, and New York headquarters. Of Canadian origin, she is a specialist in the fields of children’s rights, child labour, trafficking, children in armed conflict, juvenile justice, and a range of other ‘protection’ concerns. Her academic background ranges from international relations, to economics, and human rights law, and Susan has a number of published articles on related subjects. A documentary film for television co-produced by Susan and Trudie Styler, called A Kind of Childhood, screened at the 2003 London Human Rights Watch Film Festival.
At the Innocenti Research Center Susan manages a number of research initiatives. Among them: a 62-country study of implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child; a global study of trends and issues in child trafficking; and the provision of UNICEF research inputs into the UN study on violence against children. In addition, Susan provides support to UNICEF HQ, regional and country officers in matters relating to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and child protection.
