Some 10,000 children live on the city’s streets. From broken homes or extremely poor families, they often cannot find steady jobs and are at high risk of turning to drugs or becoming involved in crimes or other violence. Brown, C.K. A Study of Sexual Abuse in Schools in Ghana. [not published]

Brown argues that although appropriate and accessible education in necessary for children, as it prevents them from entering the workforce prematurely, educational environments are not always safe. Emerging evidence shows that sexual violence in schools is widespread and despite major developments to promote child protection, a wide gap still remains between enactment of legislation and compliance. By studying the Ghanaian case Brown thus addresses the extent, forms, perpetrators, causes, and solutions for sexual abuse of school children in Ghana.
